This notice is to inform you that the New York State Workers’ Compensation Law has just been changed to help you file a claim for workers’ compensation if you have a 9/11- related illness.
The change also applies to workers and volunteers who are not sick, but who may become sick in the future because they were exposed to the toxic air after 9/11. The deadline for registering is August 14, 2007. If you do not register before the deadline, you will never be able to collect workers’ compensation if you develop a 9/11-related illness later.
Thousands of people who participated in rescue, recovery or cleanup work after 9/11 are now sick. Many more may become sick as a result of exposure to contaminated dust and smoke.
The New York State Workers’ Compensation Law has been changed to allow someone who was exposed, but is not sick, to register. Registering now will protect your right to file a workers’ compensation claim if you become sick at any time in the future.
The law also allows anyone who already filed a claim – but was turned down because the claim was filed too late – to re-file. If you do not register and are sick or become sick later, you will not be able to file or re-file a claim.
Workers’ compensation pays all the medical expenses for a sickness or an injury that is work-related. It also pays two-thirds of your average weekly wage up to $400 a week if you cannot work because of work-related sickness or injury.
Even if you are now healthy, but were
exposed to contaminated air after 9/11, you must register now with the
Workers’ Compensation Board to protect your right to file a claim if and
when you become sick. Please visit the links below, the first is a printable
fact sheet giving you some useful information and the second is the actual
registration form. For any further information please contact the
Union Hall at (718) 322-1016
and please pass this information along to anybody you might know who worked
at the Trade Center.

The Regular Membership meetings for July and August have been canceled.
If their are any announcements, or notices coming out of the Union Hall, you can check this page for any updates.
Effective January 1, 2006 the $1.00 per hour increment you have coming from the current collective bargaining agreement will be applied to the following benefits:
.85cents per hour to the Health Fund and .15 cents per hour to the Pension Fund.
Once again Local 361 will pay 3 months dues for any Apprentice, Journeyman or Honorary member who has their dues paid thru December 31, 2005.
There will not be any exceptions.
Any Pensioner currently having their dues paid by the International will continue to have this benefit paid.
The General Executive Council of our International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers unanimously voted to increase the Per Capita Tax $1.00 per month, therefore, effective January 1, 2006 all Apprentices will pay S30.00 and all Journeymen $33.00. Please, if you have pre-paid dues through 2006 you will owe the difference.
For the past 2 years Local 361 has paid the $2.00 per month increase to the Per Capita Tax. Local 361 has also paid the $1.00 increase to the organizing fund for the last 4 years. Local 361 will continue to pay these increases thru December 31, 2006. At that time these increases will be reviewed and if the General Fund can continue to absorb the above mentioned increases it will. If the General Fund cannot absorb these increases your dues would increase $3.00 per month in 2007.
Please be advised:
In order to work at JFK and LaGuardia Airports, members must have a burning license and fire watch license in their possession. If you do not have these licenses, please obtain them as soon as possible. We can give you the required information needed for these licenses at Local 361.
Also, before starting any new job you must have picture identification, your union card and your social security card with you when you are signing up for new employment.
Local 361 needs more of our members to be track trained. You have to be track trained in order to work for the Transit Authority. Call our apprentice facility to put your name on the list for this training. The number is
(877) 361-4040.
There is also a need for our members to obtain a certificate for the operation of automatic welding machines on certain jobs. This certificate can also be obtained at our training facility.
Please be advised that any member who becomes 6 months in arrears with their dues will automatically be terminated by the International. There will be
no further notice or correspondence regarding this matter.
On or around January 15, 2006 Local 361 will be providing a toll-free number for
out of state members, the number is 1-877-312-3366.
Local 361 has been trying to obtain names of members who have lost their lives performing their work. We would like to create a plaque in their memory. Over the last 100 years records were not always kept regarding this issue.
