Opinion/EditorialPublished: November 4, 2008 By James Gary Connors I'm voting for Alfred E. Neuman for President If Alfred was the Democratic candidate running for President he would get my vote. The Party supports the working class and has the endorsement of all the major labor unions. The Democrat 's agenda includes a big tax cut for everyone who makes under 250,000 dollars a year. That sounds good to me. Money to rebuild our infrastructure (That's us guys!) A national health care plan. Our health care plans are contingent on the hours that we put in on the job. What are you gonna do if you don't have the hours? Anything is better than nothing. Fortunately we have a better Democratic candidate than controversial Alfred. The Democrats have a very polished inspirational speaker who can move the masses and with extraordinary academic achievements. Those are big assets and talents, however, Barack Obama has more important attributes that are needed to lead our country. The man has sane common sense. HE IS ALSO INTELLIGENT ENOUGH TO KNOW HOW MUCH THAT HE DOESEN'T KNOW. He sees the big picture. The man has surrounded himself with the brains and movers and shakers of the Democratic Party. The Clintons, the Kennedys, Al Gore, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Last but not least, his choice of Vice President Joe Biden to name a few. These very competent and experienced people will be the people who Obama will be welcoming and taking advice from. I did say welcoming advice from. I strongly suspect that he will appoint some of these people into his administration if he wins. Every one of these elected and former elected officials have a long history of supporting our labor unions, and the working class of America. Frankly, the President can't do much without the support of The House & Senate. The Democrats will have the overwhelming majority after the election. Some Republicans will have to cross the line as well to support the proposed tax cut, a health care plan(and after some haggling) the rebuilding of our infrastructure. Their working class (under 250,000 a year)constituents will demand it. Yes, I would even vote for MAD'S Alfred E Neuman if he were the Democratic candidate that would be able to carry out this agenda. A lot of people voted for Bush because he seemed like a regular guy. A great guy that you would probably enjoy having a few beers with. An ordinary “Joe” Well, he is an ordinary “Joe” and he does like his beers. Nothing wrong with that. At this time of many national and world crises with quick decisions to be made, we need extraordinary not ordinary. Barack Obama is not ordinary. Don't vote personality, vote smart and in your best interest,,vote Party! Mc Cain ( a great American, and admirable man) & Palin? Besides being adamantly against UNION ,Mc Cain will get nothing done if elected. He will create chaos ,havoc and stagnation. His own party is not thrilled with his candidacy, and the Democrats will give him hell. He will be totally polarized. The country needs quick on your feet decision making now, it needs action! Do you get the feeling that no one knows what to do? I don't think that any Party knows. l love the on the job expression ”Do something even if it's wrong”Whatever the Democrats decide to do it will be in your best interest. Palin? Of course Alaska is a state, but very unlike the rest of the country. Can she really relate to you and your needs? Mc Cain is not a young man. Nuff said on that subject. Foreign policy? The scare tactic that worked for Bush, and one in which Mc Cain is using now to give his campaign some credibility. It's common knowledge that the war with Iraq was not justified. Nuclear weapons were not found, and they had nothing to do with terrorism. It may have even been fabricated for some other reason. Oil comes to mind. They were as much of a security threat as Iceland. The spin: We spent billions to free the poor Iraqis from a terrible dictator. Really? The Democrats will do pretty much what the Republicans will do if Obama is elected. The President will call in his military advisors, and ask them how we can leave Iraq safely and gracefully. The Democrats are well aware that you can't undo any progress that we have made, and abandon the present administration. What's done is done. National security, and our best interest will impact any decision and action taken by the Democrats or the Republicans. Appointed by Bush, former Secretary of State,General Colin Powell (a Republican)had a lot of issues with Bush over the initiation of the war. The man was told what to do,and as a good American and soldier he reluctantly carried out his President's agenda at the time. I am a news junkie and I remember it well. I was surprised that Bush did not fire him. The man has no interest in politics, because I have been catching him on the late night talk shows for years. You have noticed that I did not mention Barack Obama's name all that much, but I did mention the Democratic Party excessively? I wanted to make the point that voting for Obama is a vote for the Democratic Party. Nuff said, James Gary Connors Ironworker's Local 361,NY jgcabny@aol.com
A foot note, something to think about: We do not have a good worldly reputation these days. Irresponsible ,reckless, self serving bullies is what I see ,and we can't go it alone. Obama and the Democrats would put a different face on America in one day. Tuesday, election day,VOTE!
